The Maharashtra government is considering moving the Kanjurmarg dumping ground to Ambernath. The government has also begun the process of acquiring 18 acres of land in Ambernath for the new dumping site.
State Industries Minister Uday Samant informed the assembly of this on Thursday, July 11. This announcement came in response to a motion for calling attention by Sunil Raut, the Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA from Vikhroli.
The Kanjurmarg dumping ground currently receives 80% of Mumbai's waste, which is a big inconvenience for residents in the eastern suburbs. Samant confirmed the government's consideration of moving the landfill. He added that Sunil Raut would discuss this with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
BJP's Ashish Shelar and UBT's Sunil Prabhu also voiced their concerns. They claimed that the BMC had promised an odourless waste-to-energy project at Kanjurmarg. But there is still a continuous stench. The MLAs demanded accountability from the civic body and the concerned firm for their misleading claims.
In response, Samant assured that measures would be taken against those responsible. He stated that an investigation would be conducted to verify the allegations. Those found accountable will face consequences. Samant promised a report on the matter to the lower chamber.
