The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to set up 15 more public garden libraries across the city. With this, the civic body is trying to expand the reading culture.

This innovative initiative will be implemented in 100 municipal parks of the city to facilitate reading in public places.

Earlier, the BMC had taken up an innovative initiative to set up libraries in public parks in 2022. The Parks Department of the Municipal Corporation has collaborated with many organizations to implement this scheme. More than 20 public libraries have been established in Colaba, Dadar, Matunga, Kandivali and other parts of the city.

Project Mumbai, one of the partner organizations for this innovative initiative, has also helped the Corporation to set up libraries at Jogeshwari, Malad, Bandra, Ghatkopar, Mulund and Santacruz. However, the organization plans to expand the project to different parts of the city by the end of this year, with around 15 libraries being set up across the city with a total of 100 libraries.

Project Mumbai founder and CEO Shishir Joshi said, “The concept behind this is to get people involved as much as possible and inculcate the idea of giving away books to citizens. When donors see that people are reading the books they donated, they feel a sense of accomplishment from philanthropy.”

"Through Reading Mumbai, we are not only trying to make reading and books accessible and accessible, but we are also trying to instill a sense of kindness among citizens through donations," said Val, Book Initiative Officer, Project Mumbai.

“So far we have set up a toy and book library with around 1,000 books in various languages at Arthur Road and Byculla Jail. This year we are planning to set up additional 15 garden community libraries,” added Shishir Joshi.
