The Maharashtra government has once again extended the operational hours of liquor stores today, March 13, till midnight.
With this, the liquor stores will be permitted to sell sealed bottles 12 am providing residents with additional time to purchase beverages for Holi, which will be celebrated on March 14
. However, this isn't the first time such a measure has been implemented.
As per a TOI report, a senior excise department official said, “In a measure to prevent bootlegging and curtail sale of illicit and counterfeit liquor during the festival of colours, the state govt has extended the operational hours for wine and beer shops on Holi.”
The circular issued by the excise department clarifies that this extended closing time of midnight supersedes the standard closing time of 10:30 pm for liquor-selling establishments in areas where district collectors have not declared dry days.
The extension, moreover, aims to facilitate responsible purchasing and
storage of liquor for Holi parties held at home or in neighbourhoods
over the two-day celebration.
Meanwhile, in the view of Holi, the Mumbai Police has announced restrictions on several activities to ensure public safety and maintain peace in the city.
