After a brief dry spell, the Mumbai city has experienced heavy downpour marking the highest single-day rainfall since 2019.
This significant observation came to light as the India Meteorological Department in Mumbai recorded 268 mm of rain till Monday morning, July 8.
Meanwhile, as per Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai has recorded over 300 mm rainfall at various places in a six-hour period from 1 am to 7 am.
However, in a flip side to this, multiple cases of disasters were reported in the city. While no lives were lost in these incidents, properties were damaged. Heavy rains in some low-lying areas led to waterlogging and disruption of suburban train services, bus services and flight cancellations.
Therefore, civic officials and Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde have advised citizens to venture out cautiously given that heavy rain will continue to lash the city.
According to the BMC's disaster cell, 39 tree collapse incidents were reported, including 19 cases in the western suburbs, eight cases in the eastern suburbs and 12 cases in the island city.
Civic officials said that trees were collapsing since most of them did not have strong roots to hold their grip with the soil below.
Four vehicles in Goregaon and a couple of autorickshaws and three-wheelers were damaged in Sion in incidents of tree collapse.
Nine incidents of short circuits were also reported in Mumbai till 8 am, so was an incident of house collapse.
