The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a significant increase in the displacement allowance for sweepers working on the solid waste management shelter project. Starting July 1, 2024, the monthly allowance will rise by INR 6,000, bringing the total to INR 20,000.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde made this announcement during the recently concluded parliamentary session. The civic body administration has implemented this increase as per the directive, aiming to enhance the wellbeing of the sweepers involved.

Previously, the displacement allowance was set at INR 14,000 per month. This amount included a stipend for housing rent. The new allowance will be given to sweepers who were displaced as part of the shelter programme.

The increase is expected to greatly improve the financial stability and standard of living for these workers. BMC officials have stated that the entire increase amount, including the shortfall for July and August, will be paid with the September 2024 salary. This means sweepers will receive an additional INR 12,000 in their September pay. This means INR 6,000 each for July and August.

The civic body is ready to distribute the increased allowance to eligible sweepers after completing the necessary administrative and technical procedures. Once these requirements are met, the revised amount will be included in the September salary. It will also include the difference between July and August 2024.

As per BMC, the changes will proceed as planned. This adjustment is intended to provide financial support to sanitation workers during their relocation.
