The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) is set to purchase 57 new bird rescue poles to help save birds stuck in high-tension wires, kite strings, and electric poles.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has invited bids for supplying these "telescopic bird rescue poles". Of the total poles, one each will be used at 35 fire stations in the city. However, the remaining poles will be kept at fire station headquarters in the eastern and western suburbs and the island city division for emergency use. The new poles will be more durable in rescuing birds.
As per MFB, they often receives calls from residents who see birds trapped on electric poles or kite strings. Furthermore, high-tension electrical wires also pass through these poles. If an electric current leaks, it can injure firefighters during rescue operations. Reports suggest that such incidents have caused serious injuries in the past.
Currently, each fire station in Mumbai has only one bird rescue pole, which was purchased in 2017. The new purchase will upgrade the equipment.
Animal welfare groups and rescuers have also observed an increase in the number of birds getting stuck in pipes, wires, and kite strings in Mumbai. The city’s rising number of high-rises and electric lines contributes to this issue. Many birds also get injured by kite strings during festivals like Makar Sankranti.
Data shows that at least 40 birds, including pigeons, owls, and kites, were injured during this year’s Makar Sankranti celebrations. These injuries ranged from minor cuts to severe wounds. Each year, around 700 to 800 bird rescue calls are reported in the city.
