The power grid failure that affected Mumbai on Monday, October 12, has also affected the normal water supply in various parts of the city. This has further prompted the BMC to ask the people to use the water sparingly.
As a consequence of both the sources of electricity at the Bhandup Treatment Plant failing, pumps across reservoirs in the city were rendered useless. The Hydraulic Department tried to restore the supply in several areas, however, they are touted to get water only on Tuesday.
The city gets water from Tansa and Bhatsa pipelines. Treated water is stored in the Master Balancing Reservoirs (MBR) located near treatment plants in Bhandup and Yewai. It is further distributed to 27 service reservoirs located throughout Mumbai.
The unprecedented citywide power outage had earlier disrupted the power supply in areas like Thane, Kalyan, Palghar and Navi Mumbai due to sudden technical failure at Mahatrans' Kalwa-Padgha GIS centre. This had affected several sectors, including the local trains, in the financial capital of the country.
In view of the event, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray held a meeting to discuss the outage. The Maharashtra CMO had also informed about Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray speaking to State Power Minister Nitin Raut and BMC Commissioner IS Chahal over grid failure in Mumbai.
