The 125-year-old Prabhadevi flyover will be demolished and a new two-level flyover will be constructed in its place under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority's (MMRDA) Sewri-Worli elevated road. The flyover will be closed for traffic in the second week of April. After that, the demolition of the bridge will begin. The Mumbai Traffic Police will give final permission for the demolition before April 10. In the meantime, this road will remain closed for the next year.

To provide faster access to Atal Setu from South Mumbai, the MMRDA is constructing a 4.5 km and 17-gauge Sewri-Worli elevated road. This elevated road will pass through the Prabhadevi flyover connecting Prabhadevi and Parel railway stations. Since the Prabhadevi flyover was old and a new bridge needed to be built, the MMRDA decided to demolish the bridge and build a new two-level bridge in its place, extending the elevated road.

Accordingly, a proposal was sent to the traffic police for a 'No Objection' certificate to close the bridge and demolish the bridge. The demolition work was planned to be done by closing the bridge in February. However, there was opposition to closing the bridge in the backdrop of the 10th and 12th exams. Due to this, the demolition work of the bridge was delayed. However, now, sources in the MMRDA have informed that the bridge is likely to be closed in the second week of April.

Sources have expressed the possibility that the traffic police will issue a 'no objection certificate' before April 10. Sources also say that in view of the possibility of getting a no objection certificate in April, the MMRDA has already completed preparations to start the demolition work and the construction of the new double-level bridge.

Daily Megablock

A few hours of megablock will be taken every day on the Central and Western Railway lines for the demolition of the bridge and the construction of the new bridge. It will be clear soon how many hours this megablock will be and at what time it will be taken. Meanwhile, an 800 metric ton capacity crane will be used for the demolition of the bridge. A 500 metric ton crane will also be kept on reserve at the project site.

Alternatives for pedestrian traffic

The north side of the existing railway footbridge near Parel station will be used as a ‘non-ticket zone’. A new pedestrian bridge is being constructed by the railways near Prabhadevi station. The work on this bridge will be completed soon, so it will be available for pedestrians.
