The Maharashtra government has announced plans to promote the construction of iconic structures in Mumbai. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde informed the legislative council about the initiative on Wednesday, March 26. The government will improve Mumbai’s skyline and create defining landmarks.
Shinde stated that some historic buildings from the British era have shaped Mumbai’s identity. The new policy will encourage the creation of modern structures with unique features. He emphasised that Mumbai is a world-class city, and more skyscrapers should be built to enhance its appeal.
Current development control regulations pose limitations on such projects. To address this, Shinde has instructed the civic authority to revise Section 37(1) of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act.
The changes will introduce a special provision for landmark structures in the Development Control and Promotion Regulations (DCPR). The modifications will ensure that upcoming construction projects align with the goal of building iconic structures.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been directed to implement these revisions. They will provide flexibility in urban planning while improving Mumbai’s architectural landscape.
