MBMC, Thane Civic Body Razes Nearly 15 Illegal Pubs, Bars & Over 30 Pan Shops

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) and Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) have initiated a drive to demolish illegal establishments, along with pubs and bars flouting rules and engaged in drug-related activities.

It is pertinent to note that this development came a day after Chief Minister Eknath Shinde directed action against joints selling intoxicating substances in the wake of the Pune bar case. Also, this is an effort to make the twin city and Thane drug-free.

Impact of Initiative in Thane:

In this drive, more than 30 paan shops and over half a dozen half a dozen hookah parlours, bars, pubs were razed on Thursday, June 27.

As per data revealed by the civic body, in Thane city, eight unauthorised bars and pubs and 31 paan shops and gutkha vendors, which was 100 metres of schools and colleges, were pulled down for operating without permission.

In the Wagle Estate area, action was taken against Panchsheel Bar, Indian Taste Bar. Secret Bar and Hookah Parlour in the Vartak Nagar Ward Committee area, as well as pubs and bars located in Kothari Compound, were razed. An unauthorised construction of Social House Pub was also demolished. In Uthalsar, the action was initiated on unauthorised hotels and hookah parlours. Similarly, Khushi Ladies Bar on Ghodbunder Road and Mayuri ladies bar at Ovala were razed to the ground.

This took place on the directions of TMC Commissioner Saurabh Rao in various wards of the city.

Details of Drive in Mira Bhayandar

Meanwhile, MBMC civic chief Rajesh Katkar said five illegal bars were demolished and more will face action on Friday, June 28. Whereas, MBMC’s anti-encroachment squad led by deputy municipal commissioner, Ravi Pawar, demolished seven illegally constructed establishments were bulldozed. Of which, two were identified as “Timeless” and “Aishwarya” as they were constructed without permission.

There are a total of 150 such establishments in the MBMC limits. Of these, the municipal commissioner identified 22 illegal bars where youth frequently consume narcotics and alcohol.
