Jalgaon cybercrime police have discovered 16 social media users involved in uploading child pornography. A complaint has been filed regarding this case. The investigation started when the Mumbai cyber department received information from the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).
NCMEC is a US-based NGO established by the United States Congress. NCMEC provides a centralised system for internet services like YouTube and Facebook to report individuals distributing child pornography.
A contract between NCMEC and the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) allows the NCRB to get data on child exploitation. NCMEC notified the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) about the accounts.
The information showed that the offenders were residents of the Jalgaon district. This data included their IP addresses, usernames, URL specifics, and associated email addresses.
According to sources, the child pornography content was shared on Facebook and Instagram. The police have filed a complaint under Section 67B of the Information Technology Act regarding the posting or distribution of content showing children engaging in sexual acts.
The police have begun an investigation to identify the culprits. In December 2019, the Maharashtra cyber department launched Operation Blackface to combat online child sexual assault images.
In 2022, they started a programme to train about 300 police officers in recognising and investigating cybercrimes. These crimes include phishing, cryptocurrency-related money laundering, UPI and net banking scams, darknet activities, and online child pornography.
