On April 6, 2025, Officers of Mumbai Customs, Zone-III, at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), continued their enforcement drive against smuggling activities and effected significant seizures in two separate cases involving narcotic substances and gold.
1. Seizure of Hydroponic Weed (Marijuana) – Illicit Market Value ₹9.53 Crore
On the basis of spot profiling, Customs officers intercepted one passenger who arrived from Bangkok to Mumbai by IndiGo Airlines flight 6E 1052. Examination of the passenger’s trolley bag led to the recovery of 9.532 kg of suspected hydroponic weed (marijuana), having an illicit market value of approximately ₹9.53 crore. The contraband was ingeniously concealed inside the trolley bag. The passenger was arrested under the relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. Further investigation is currently underway.
2. Seizure of Smuggled Gold – Provisional Value ₹58.83 Lakh
In a separate case, based on specific intelligence, Customs officers intercepted two passengers who arrived from Dubai to Mumbai by IndiGo Airlines flight 6E 1854. Upon examination, officers recovered 21 KT crude gold in the form of pieces weighing 0.789 kg, provisionally valued at ₹58.83 lakh. The gold was found concealed in the undergarments worn by the passengers. Necessary action as per Customs law is being taken, and investigations are ongoing.
