The Navi Mumbai Crime Branch Unit-1 team has busted a gang of vehicle thieves. It included one of the two masterminds who used a hi-tech gadget to hack the vehicles’ engine module system.

Reportedly, the police have recovered 18 LMVs worth INR 1.47 crores. They have arrested seven gang members from Ghatkopar, Surat in Gujarat, and Murshidabad, Kolkata and Asansol in Bengal.

Mohd. Habibulla, who is the kingpin, was a mechanic who stayed in Ulwe while his aide Manoj Gupta is a Kalyan resident. Both of them, who are hailing from Uttar Pradesh (UP), was arrested in Ulwe.

Sunil Shinde, the senior inspector, said that the wanted mastermind Raje Soni is a Chembur resident. He rented a flat in Ulwe for Habibulla and Gupta. Soni told the flat owner that they were high-rank officers at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT).

Habibullah would first break a vehicle’s windowpane to enter the car and disconnect the DCM (direct communication module) socket. Following this, he would open the bonnet and disconnect the siren and then enter the vehicle. After entering, he will reconnect the DCM circuit and then place a hi-tech gadget on the ignition button. He will use a duplicate key to start the car and would take only three minutes to drive the vehicle, said Shinde.

Shinde further said that after arresting Habibullah and Gupta, they recovered seven stolen cars worth INR 64.50 lakhs. They led them to other dealers, and later on, the police arrested them.
