After Dalit activist and writer Anand Teltumbde moved to Bombay High Court with a petition to quash FIR registered against him, the court on Friday directed Maharashtra government to not take stringent action or arrest the activist until October 26.
Teltumbde approached Bombay HC requesting to quash the First Information Report (FIR) which was filed against him by Pune Police. Earlier, the police raided Teltumbde’s house and claimed to have found documents which established his connection with Maoists.
Teltumbde’s lawyer also appealed to the court to do away with the criminal proceedings against him and said that there is no evidence against him regarding his role in Elgar Parishad.
After the Bhima-Koregaon Violence, Pune Police arrested activists including Sudhir Dhawale, Surendra Gadling, Rona Wilson, Shoma Sen, and Mahesh Raut in a series of arrests followed by the arrest of five activists — Varavara Rao, Vernon Gonsalves, Arun Ferreira, Gautam Navlakha, and Sudha Bharadwaj on August 28.
Before arresting, Pune Police carried out multi-city raids and arrested the activists. The petition filed also mentions that there was an unwarranted search conducted at his house on August 28 which violates his rights as well as had a tender impact on his reputation.
As this happened, Teltumbde along with civil right organisations conducted a press conference at Mumbai Press Club and said that he would have also been arrested if he had been at his place. No one was at his residence when the raid was conducted, informed Teltumbde.
