The Maharashtra government has been constantly addressing citizens to wear masks while venturing out. Now, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started a crackdown on those violating this rule and the penalty for not wearing a mask has also been doubled.

In its first, the civic body on Wednesday registered an FIR against a Govandi resident for not wearing a mask. A 28-year-old named Rahul Wankhede was booked for venturing out mask-less in a public place.

The four municipal employees were deployed in Chembur Savli Naka area on Wednesday to ensure that COVID-19 rules are followed. Wankhede was questioned and fined ₹200 by the BMC staff. However, he got into an argument with the civic body employees who called the police.

The 28-year-old was taken to the Govandi police station in the afternoon and booked under sections  188 and 186 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and other relevant sections of the Epidemic Diseases Act.

This is the first time an FIR has been registered against a person for not wearing a mask in public since the coronavirus outbreak started. BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal had issued an order to take action against those violating the rules in public places. Special attention will be given to shopkeepers, vendors and employees working in restaurants to ensure that they wear masks.

Punitive actions are already been taken against those who go mask-less in public places. Action has been taken against more than 40,000 citizens till date and more than ₹1.5 crores have been collected. The fine for not wearing a face mask is likely to be increased to ₹400.
