Maharashtra's first-ever "fort-specific" disaster management plan will soon be in place at Panhala Fort in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. The fort's vulnerability to natural disasters is well-known. The detailed disaster management strategy was developed as per the National Disaster Management Guidelines from September 2017.

Project Timeline:

  • The final plan was delivered to the State Disaster Management Authority last month.
  • Implementation is expected to begin in December 2024.
  • It will take two more months to implement the plan.
  • A meeting is scheduled for the end of December to clarify roles and responsibilities.
  • The meeting will involve discussion between multiple stakeholders.

Features of the disaster management plan:

- The goal is to protect India's cultural heritage sites.

- Discussions are underway to secure search and rescue equipment.

- The Panhala Fort disaster management plan is based on a hazard, risk, and vulnerability assessment.

- The study identified key danger zones. It suggests adding clear signs and evacuation routes.

- It also calls for maintenance and upgrades for drainage and electrical systems.

The District Emergency Operations Centre and Fire Department are already on alert. They are prepared to handle any emergencies.

The District Disaster Management Authority is moving forward with mitigation measures. They are using the State Disaster Mitigation Fund. Projects include gabion barriers and retaining walls to reduce landslide risks. This will make the fort safer from natural threats.

Wildfires and landslides have occurred in the past, with significant incidents in 2019 and 2021. Wildfires are common from March to May. Meanwhile, landslides often occur between June and September. The new plan will protect this heritage from a range of risks.

Panhala Fort is over 1,000 years old. It is located about 20 kilometres from Kolhapur city. It has a rich cultural and historical importance in Maharashtra.
