Maharashtra government has introduced a new policy for Class 10 students under the revised State Curriculum Framework for School Education (SCF-SE).
As per this policy, students who do not secure the passing score of 35 marks in science and math will still be able to progress to Class 11. This will apply if they score at least 20 marks in these subjects.
These students will not be allowed to take science or math in Class 11. Instead, they will need to opt for courses in other streams. The goal is to reduce dropout rates by offering flexibility to students who struggle in these subjects.
Students scoring between 20 and 34 marks will have two options. They can either take the exams again to improve their scores or proceed to Class 11 with a mark on their report card. This mark will reflect their lower scores but will let them continue their education without science or math.
This policy was implemented following concerns raised by parents. Many parents requested less pressure on their children when it comes to subjects like math and science. Education experts have welcomed the move as it provides relief to students and encourages them to continue their education.
Teachers believe that many students aiming for careers in fields like arts, literature, and humanities will prefer this option. They see no issue in choosing the first option, as it will not affect their future studies.
However, some experts have voiced concerns about the policy. Some feel that lowering the passing marks could affect the quality of education. They argue that students should have a basic understanding of science and math for their daily lives. Some experts have also suggested that the government should consider introducing alternative subjects in Class 10.
