The Indian Meteorological Department has taken up the 'Mission Mausam' project for accurate, timely and location-wise weather forecasting and the campaign was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, January 14 at a function organised to mark the 150th foundation day of the Indian Meteorological Department.
The 150-year journey of India Meteorological Department is not just a journey of a department but of modern science and technology in India. During these 150 years, the department has served crores of Indians and this institution is a symbol of India's scientific progress, Prime Minister Modi said on the occasion. Prime Minister also said that the number of Doppler Weather Radar, Automatic Weather Stations, Runway Weather Monitoring System and District wise Rainfall Monitoring Stations have been increased.
State-of-the-art weather forecasting tools will be made available through Mission Mausam. This will enable more accurate, timely and location-wise weather forecasting. At present there are only 22 radars of 'S Band' quality in the country.
Objective of the project
The major sectors of 'Mission Mausam' will benefit agriculture, aviation, disaster management, tourism and health and this project will mainly work for weather monitoring, forecasting and warning. Its objective is not only to improve the weather forecast in the country but also to manage certain meteorological phenomena and control disasters like rain, hail, fog as required, the Meteorological Department informed.
