The Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation's (MBMC) Adopt-a-Tree scheme has become an instant hit amongst citizens, social organisations, and businesses. The project was introduced on August 15. Since then, 2,523 applications have been received by MBMC.

The Western Railway (WR) has also actively participated by planting 3,684 saplings. This has increased the applications for trees to a total number of 6,384 in less than four months.

Under the plan, the MBMC’s tree authority has identified and geotagged several locations for planting trees. The plan will let participants adopt trees in different ways. Trees can be adopted as memorials for loved ones or as family dedications. The names of adopters and the planting date are displayed on the tree guards.

By paying a one-time fee of INR 7,000 for seedling planting, excavation, manure, two-year care, and tree guardians, any individual, business, or organisation can adopt a tree. The project aims to increase the city's green space through community participation.

The MBMC has also implemented a unique redressal system. This system addresses complaints related to the care and safety of the trees. The adopter's chosen name is displayed on the protective guard of the tree.

For plantations at specified locations, suitable sapling species (flowering and shady) had been handpicked in order to preserve uniformity. Additionally, a tree can be adopted as a kid or as a family memorial.
