Mumbai has recorded its hottest day so far as the maximum temperature reaches 39 degrees Celsius.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD)’s Santacruz observatory recorded 39.2 degrees on Tuesday, March 11, making it the city’s warmest March day since 2023, when day time temperatures had touched 39.4 degrees on March 13.
Meanwhile, the Colaba coastal observatory recorded 38 degrees.
However, a cooler weekend is likely with the weather department forecasting a dip in scorching heat levels from March 13. Temperatures are expected to vary between 34-35 degrees, which is normal for the month of March.
The minimum temperatures also registered a slight spike as the Santacruz stations woke up to readings of 23.4 degrees Celsius on March 12. A day earlier, on March 11, 22.8 degrees and 25 degrees were recorded at Santacruz and Colaba observatory respectively.
Officials from IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai attributed the spike in daytime temperatures to strong easterly winds and the absence of sea breeze.
The weather department had earlier issued a yellow alert for heatwave conditions in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri from March 9 to March 11.
