In the month of August, Mumbai has seen good rainfall. As a matter of fact, the city came very close to breaking the record set in 1958. Back in 1958, the city had recorded 1,254mm of rainfall at the Santacruz’s observatory. And in the year 2020, the city recorded 1,248mm which is a mere 6.3 mm shortfall. With this rainfall, Mumbai also managed to break the record set in August 1983, when the city recorded 1,244 mm rainfall.
In comparison in the year 2019, 586mm of rainfall was recorded in the month of August.
As per Indian Metrological department, on August 31 (Monday) between 8.30 am and 8.30 pm, Santacruz recorded 7.6 mm of rain while Colaba recorded 4.6 mm rain rainfall respectively.
The Monsoon 2020 started on the dry note with less than average rain being recorded in the month of June. However, as the monsoon progressed the rain has been getting better. Overall, Maharashtra has received about 17 per cent excess rainfall than the average. As per the stats shared by IMD, Maharashtra recorded 961.6 mm rainfall from June 1 to August 31. The average rainfall over the years for this time period is 824.5mm
The maximum rain in the month of August was experienced in the starting few days of the month and the end few days.
Thanks to the monsoon picking up the water reservoirs around Mumbai are also now 96.2 per cent full.
On Sunday, Barvi dam had started to overflow. For those unaware, the Barvi Dam, which supplies water to Thane district. The water level reached its full capacity due to the constant rainfall in the region and the gates of the dam were opened to release excess water. Last year, the Barvi dam started overflowing on August 4.
In Thane district, Kalyan-Dombivli, Thane city, Mira-Bhayandar, Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, Badlapur get their water supply from the Barvi dam. The overflowing of the dam has alleviated water concerns in these cities.
