The ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) has been offering permissions to select hospitals to conduct convalescent plasma therapy on patients affected by the coronavirus. The process involves collecting antibodies from recovered patients to those in a critical stage of the coronavirus infection.

New to this list of hospitals that can conduct plasma trials are Kasturba and Nair Hospitals in Mumbai which are run by the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation). The ICMR mentioned that it has approved trials for plasma therapy at 28 institutions and 6 of them are in the state of Maharashtra.

An additional 15 hospitals in Maharashtra which also includes several hospitals in Mumbai are said to be on the ICMR’s waitlist. This reportedly includes the KEM Hospital and Institute of Immunohematology. As of now, the only other hospital in Mumbai that can conduct plasma trials is the HN Reliance Foundation Hospital.

The Nair Hospital blood bank has previously collected 12 units of convalescent plasma from recovered patients and one was even used on a patient at Lilavati, who later succumbed to the virus.
