King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in Mumbai has launched a new ward dedicated to patients with breast conditions, including those suffering from breast cancer. It will improve women's healthcare and treatment for patients needing special attention.
Until now, these patients were kept in the general female ward. Due to more admissions, the hospital decided to create a separate space. Breast cancer patients undergo strong chemotherapy, which weakens their immune system. This makes them more likely to get infections, so isolation is necessary.
The new ward has 15 beds and is divided into two sections. While its main focus is breast cancer, it will admit all patients with breast-related issues. Each patient will follow a personalised treatment plan. The staff has received special training to care for those going through chemotherapy.
KEM Hospital started its outpatient breast cancer services in 2010. However, the plan for a dedicated ward was delayed for many years. Bureaucratic hurdles caused repeated delays. Dr Rao, who has led the initiative since 2010, finally made the ward possible.
In addition to the ward, KEM Hospital has also introduced a new device called Thermalytix. It is an artificial intelligence-powered tool that helps detect breast cancer. The device was provided free of cost by MCGM under its Innovation Study Programme. Even after the study ends, the hospital will reportedly keep the machine.
As per reports, Thermalytix costs only a fraction of the price of a standard mammography machine. Unlike traditional mammography, this device does not require any contact.
The patient sits in front of the machine, and there is no need for pressure or movement. It scans the breast from all angles and uses a red light to mark possible tumours or cysts. The whole process takes 7 to 15 minutes depending on body temperature. Doctors examine the reports and decide the next steps in treatment.
All services at KEM, including mammography, surgery, and chemotherapy, are completely free. Radiation and chemotherapy are also covered under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojna (MPJAY).
