The Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) has approved the second phase of Metro Lines 5 and 9, running in the eastern and western regions of MMR. On July 24, five significant project decisions were made by the MMRDA executive committee.
Metro 5
The MMRDA has appointed the NACPL-MANSI-UCC consortium for the design, supply, and fabrication of steel structures and architectural finishing for six elevated stations of Metro-5. These stations are Balkum, Kasheli, Kalher, Purna, Anjurphata, and Dhamankar Naka. These six stations will account for 11.8 kilometres of the line.
The contract also included extra structural work. This includes plumbing, interior fit-outs, and entry and exit structures. Additionally, it will also require internal and external architectural finishing of these six elevated stations for Metro 5.
In total, Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro-5 will be a 24.5-kilometre-long line with 15 stations. MMRDA has already finished 89% of the work.
Metro 9
On Metro 9, two distinct packages of tenders have been awarded to contractors for the eight elevated stations. They are Dahisar, Pandhurang Wadi, Miragaon, Kashigaon, Sai Baba Nagar, Meditiya Nagar, Shahid Bhagat Singh Garden, and Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium.
These eight stations along the 11.38 km Metro-9 (Red Line) will include multi-modal amenities to improve last-mile connectivity, accessibility, and safety. In total, the MMRDA has completed 87% of the work on Metro 9.
Metro 7A & 9 Depot
On Metro 7A, two stations are currently under construction: CSIA (underground) and Airport Colony (elevated). Furthermore, a contractor has been chosen to develop the Metro 9 and 7A depot at Dongri on 59.65 hectares of land at an estimated cost of INR 701 crore.
Dongri's depot can accommodate 40 metro rakes, each with eight cars, and facilitate maintenance operations. The depot was earlier planned for the villages of Morva, Raimurdhe, and Murdhe, which would have required the rehabilitation of nearly 540 families. The current depot land is government-owned, so there are no purchase expenses for the MMRDA.
The MoU signed in 2017 with DMRC to establish the communications and signalling systems for Metro 9 and 7A has also been approved. Alstom onboard equipment is installed on BEML rolling stock used by Metro 7. The same system will be replicated as these two lines are extensions of Metro 7.
Other projects
For the Slum Rehabilitation Scheme at Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar, MMRDA has hired architects and project managers. The scheme will be developed on 33.15 hectares of land.
