The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has begun constructing a Multi-Level Robotic Parking Tower (MRPT) at Hutatma Chowk in South mumbai. Former BJP Corporator Makarand Narwekar led the groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, March 5. The automated facility will accommodate 194 cars and help with the parking issues in the area.
The project is part of a larger BMC plan to build multi-level parking facilities in the city. Other locations for MRPTs include the BMC Engineering Hub in Worli, the Matunga Central Railway Station, and the Mumbadevi Temple in Kalbadevi. The total budget for these parking projects is INR 504.19 crore.
However, a proposed 23-floor MRPT near Matunga East Railway Station was recently cancelled due to local opposition. Therefore, BMC has moved forward with South Mumbai’s first underground MRPT. The Hutatma Chowk facility will have four underground levels and cost INR 70 crore.
The site has a 12-meter-wide access road on the west side and a 7-meter-wide road on the east. Vehicles will enter from the east and exit from the west. The open area above the facility will serve as a waiting space for cars before parking.
The tower will use advanced lift technology to move vehicles to their designated spots. Cars can be retrieved in around three minutes. This automated system will improve efficiency and reduce parking time.
Under the BMC’s Development Plan 2034, certain land parcels are reserved for parking. However, the growing number of vehicles has led to the conversion of open spaces into parking lots. In 2023, officials suggested a parking facility at Bandra’s Patwardhan Park, but the plan was scrapped after public protests.
Currently, BMC provides parking for 40,000 vehicles across Mumbai. This includes 28,500 spaces in public lots and 11,500 on the streets.
