After a scuffle, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirit Somaiya on Thursday was detained by Mumbai Police for demanding an investigation into the death of a woman, whose dead body was found floating at Haji Ali beach.

Earlier, Sheetal Dama - a Ghatkopar resident - was swept away by a gutter in Ghatkopar amid heavy downpour in Mumbai and was found at Haji Ali beach after 33 hours. Many have held Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) responsible for her demise.

Meanwhile, the officers probing the incident said that foul play might be involved in the incident. There are at least three chokepoints in the drainage line where the body should have gotten stuck in case the woman fell into the manhole, Deputy Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Darade said.

He further informed that her body should have been found at Mithi river at Mahim as the sewage line is not connected to the Worli nullah. The 32-year-old had gone to the flour mill on October 3 with her son. However, after not returning home for hours, the family went out to search for her.

The Police suspected that she had fallen in the manhole and extended the search to Tardeo, Mahim, Bandra, Kurla and Saki Naka, where the sewage line led. Eventually, her body was found washed up at Haji Ali. However, there are no eyewitnesses to the incident.

The police did not register an FIR in the case even after 12 days. Shital Dama's family wants justice. Therefore, Kirit Somaiya had said that he would hold a sit-in agitation outside Chirag Nagar police station in Ghatkopar West with his family. However, after an altercation with the police, he was detained.
