Notorious gangster Abu Salem approached the High Court demanding that he not be shifted from Taloja Jail in Navi Mumbai, claiming that his life was in danger. An urgent hearing on his petition will be held on Thursday, July 7. Salem's plea to keep Taloja in jail on security grounds was rejected by the special court. At the same time, it was clarified that he should not be shifted to another jail till July 3. Salem has challenged this decision of the special court.
His plea came up for hearing on Wednesday before a bench of Justice Ajay Gadkari and Justice Neela Gokhale. However, Justice Gokhale said that he cannot hear this matter. Hence, Salem's lawyers filed a petition before a bench of Justice Bharti Dangre and Justice Manjusha Deshpande seeking an urgent hearing. Taking cognizance of it, the court kept this petition for urgent hearing on Thursday.
Salem is serving a life sentence in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. Moreover, the period he spent in jail between arrest and sentencing was recently waived from his sentence by a special CBI court. Besides, the period served by him in the Pradeep Jain case has also been waived from the sentence. So, soon you will be released from prison. Therefore, Salem has claimed in the petition that his life is in danger if he is kept in another jail.

In Taloja Jail, we are kept in a high-security egg cell. Conversely, if you are housed in other prisons, you are at risk of being attacked by members of rival criminal gangs who are incarcerated there. Similarly, Salem has also claimed in the petition that the decision of the prison administration to shift him to another prison when he was to be released from the prison after a few months was unnecessary and with ill intention.
Two cases are being tried against him in Delhi too and for that he will have to go to the court there. But, if we are kept in other jails, it will be difficult to go for these cases and the trial will be delayed, Salem also said in the petition. Meanwhile, the high security cell in Taloja jail has fallen into disrepair and requires urgent repairs. Therefore, during the hearing in the special court, the jail administration had told the court that Salem should be shifted to Nashik Central Jail.
