Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Friday announced financial assistance worth ₹10,000 crores for the flood-affected people in the state. The funds will be used to provide relief to those including farmers who have been affected due to the heavy downpour.
This decision comes after Thackeray chaired a review meeting to help the flood victims. Maharashtra Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat, state Transport Minister Anil Parab, state Water Resource Minister Jayant Patil, state Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Vijay Wadettiwar were present at the meeting.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar was also present at the meeting via video conferencing. He has been under home-quarantine after his visit to Solapur.
While speaking to the reporters, Thackeray said that the financial assistance to the flood victims will be provided by Diwali. The Chief Minister said that the heavy rainfall has destroyed the crops and infrastructure.
“We considered everyone’s opinion and those who have been affected can’t be left in trouble. Therefore, we have decided to provide financial assistance worth ₹10,000 crores which would be used for different purposes,” Thackeray said.
The government will try to provide relief to every victim by Diwali, the Chief Minister said while adding that the government will provide ₹10,000 per hectare and ₹25,000 will be provided per hectare for the damaged fruit crops.
The torrential downpour in western and central Maharashtra has resulted in floods, landslides and severe water-logging in many low-lying areas. While at least 48 people have lost their lives, over 7 lakh hectares of crops such as cotton, sugarcane, pomegranate etc. have been damaged.
