People are committing suicides due to family disputes, work stress, financial difficulties, illness, depression, love break up, and many do it near the railway tracks. It has been revealed that an average of three to four suicides are taking place on Central and Western Railway every day, as per the sources. In the last six months, 51 people have committed suicide on the Central and Western Railways, including 47 males and 4 females.


A video circulating on social media of a middle-aged man and his son committing suicide by sleeping under a speeding train on the Western Railway line came as a shock. The increasing number of people committing suicide by sleeping on the railway track and jumping under the running train has also become a concern for the railway administration.


Between January and June 2024, there were 34 suicides on Central Railway. It includes 31 males and 3 females. So, during the same period, 17 suicides took place on the Western Railway including 16 men and 1 woman. As many as 20 suicide cases were recorded in the limits of Kalyan Railway Police Station. While, on the Western Railway, 12 suicide incidents were reported within the limits of Palghar Railway Police Station.

Suicide disrupting railway services

Many times, local trains are delayed due to technical failure and many times it gets delayed due to suicides. Post the suicide, it takes a long time for the concerned department of Central Railway or Western Railway to know about the related incident, and for the dead body to be picked up by the workers. This then impacts the services. 


A total of 51 cases of suicide were reported on Central and Western Railways between January 1 to June 30, 2024, including 47 men and 4 women. 34 suicide cases (31 males and 3 females) were reported on Central Railway, while 17 suicide cases (16 males and 1 female) were reported on Western Railway.


Between January 1 and June 30, 2023, a total of 50 suicide cases were reported on Central and Western Railways including 41 men and 9 women. 33 suicide cases (27 men and 6 women) were reported on Central Railway, while 17 suicide cases (14 men and 3 women) were reported on Western Railway.


Most suicide cases reported in Kalyan, Palghar

Kalyan and Palghar recorded the highest number of suicide cases among all the police limits of the Central and Western Railways. From January to June 2023, 14 suicide cases were reported in Kalyan and 8 in Palghar. And during the same period this year, 20 suicide cases have been recorded in Kalyan and 12 in Palghar.
