The first phase of the Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Metro 3 route from Aarey to BKC will soon be put into service and Mumbaikars are looking forward to the subway journey. About 60 percent of Mumbaikars are eager to use the Metro 3 route and 60 percent of them are currently traveling by rickshaws or taxis.
A survey conducted by Earth Global, a transport services consultancy, on the use of Metro 3 has revealed the trend of Mumbaikars. Citizens are more eager to use this new mode of transportation as underground Metro is an alternative to high speed transport system and it will save travel time.
The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) is working on the 33.5 km subway Metro 3 line. Although this route has been delayed, now the Aarey to BKC section of it is likely to be put into service soon. Next year probably, one will be able to travel from Aarey to Cuffe Parade on the entire route. Meanwhile, a survey has been conducted by Mumbai-based Earth Global Institute regarding Metro 3 in the background of the entry of this route into traffic service in July. A questionnaire has been filled by 1482 citizens of Andheri East, Vile Parle, Kalina, Bandra East and Dharavi areas regarding the use of Metro 3.
60 percent of the citizens who participated in the survey have clarified that they will use Metro 3. The number of those who do it is more. 58.9 percent of men and 57.7 percent of women said that they would use Metro 3 to save travel time. After the construction of the metro network in Mumbai, the metro 3 route will be connected with other metro routes, but the number of passengers of the metro 3 will increase significantly from this report.
Metro is better than rickshaw, taxi
At present, 63 percent of citizens who travel by rickshaws and taxis are rooting for Metro 3. Currently, 59 percent of those who travel by local and best buses and 57 percent of those who travel by four-wheelers and two-wheelers are eager to use Metro 3. 58 percent of those who are keen on metro travel are male and 57 percent are female. Considering the age group of the potential users, 58 percent of the 18 to 30 age group, 56 percent of the 31 to 45 age group, 59 percent of the 46 to 60 age group and 49 percent of the above 60 years age group have explained that they will use this route.
Why are 40 percent of citizens not in favour of Metro 3?
These 40 percent people are unsure of its safety. Only 14.6 percent of women and 12.9 percent of men feel this mode of transportation is safe. Also Metro 3 is not connected to many parts of Mumbai. Similarly, some believe that the fares of Metro 3 will be high.
