Mumbaikars can heave a sigh of relief as the fare of BEST buses might not increase. A few days ago, the Supreme Court (SC) asked the Maharashtra State Election Commission to conduct elections for all local bodies along with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) within 4 months. Along with this, the court also said that the Election Commission should release the timetable for the elections within 1 month.
Now since there is every possibility of BMC elections within 4 months, it is possible that the price of BEST tickets may not increase at least till the elections. However, no such official announcement has been made by BEST about the same. As per the sources, the ticket prices of BEST buses were going to increase from Thursday, May 8 but no such announcement was made.
What did the Supreme Court say?
On Tuesday, May 6, the Supreme Court issued an interim order directing the Maharashtra State Election Commission to conduct local body elections within four months. These elections had been delayed due to litigation concerning the implementation of reservations for Other Backward Classes (OBCs). The Court specified that the elections should proceed based on the OBC reservation criteria that existed prior to the submission of the Banthia Commission report in July 2022.
