The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to finally construct a skywalk at the Maharana Pratap Junction in Mulund (West).
The skywalk is being built in view of traffic congestion on LBS Road, which is one of the busiest routes with heavy traffic. Five roads connecting to the junction makes pedestrian movement difficult. Therefore, skywalk will help pedestrians to cross LBS Marg.
It will be connected to the BEST bus depot and the proposed Metro station, easing traffic congestion for further seamless connectivity.
BMC Bridge Division Chief Engineer said that the total length of the proposed skywalk will be 451.16 meters and the width will be 3 meters. This bridge will be constructed by pile foundation method. The bridge construction will be provided with steel composite plate girders with 125 mm thick concrete deck slab.
A modern escalator will be installed with anti-skid tiles slabs. Polypropylene sheets are going to be used on the roof construction of the skywalk.
A survey was recently conducted to find out the pedestrian count and traffic volume on this road. After study, a feasibility report was prepared by a consultancy firm. Considering various options, it was decided to construct a skywalk, said Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) P Velrasu.
