Data released by the Central Railway states that the department is currently operating 355 special suburban services (Mumbai local trains) for essential service employees, as notified by the Government of Maharashtra. However, with an aim to maintain social distance and avoid congestion, Central Railway, in a recently taken decision, has planned to increase the number of daily special suburban services from 355 to 423.
This was made effective from Thursday, September 24, 2020, and the concerned division has now decided to run additional 68 local trains - 46 services on the Central line and 22 services on harbour line.

Central Railway, as directed by the Government of Maharashtra, had introduced selected services of special suburban trains in Mumbai from June 15, 2020. However, with services and daily life resuming under the 'Mission Begin Again' initiative, services have been gradually increased for the convenience of passengers, with an aim to avoid congestion and by maintaining social distancing. All passengers travelling by the local have been asked to adhere to the norms and wear masks in public and also while travelling in the local trains.
