From Saturday, November 6, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) introduced 100 dedicated AC, as well as, non-AC Tejaswini buses for women, highlighted reports. The service will restart the women dedicated buses that were stopped during the lockdown initiated due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Based on reports, the services will be functional on 70 bus routes in Mumbai, as well as, suburban Mumbai. It is believed that the BEST functions almost 3,500 buses in the island city, which comprise those on wet lease. Almost 2.4m passengers use the BEST buses daily.

The Chief Minister’s Office, Maharashtra also took to Twitter to acknowledge the news. Stating that the proclamation was made as a gift to women in Mumbai on the occasion of the Bhau Bheej festivity.

Local train services in Mumbai were hindered for the general public, on April 15 post the increase in COVID-19 cases. Recently, the services were reopened for the public. Moreover, the government proclaimed that even those under the age of 18 will be allowed to use the local trains.

Even amidst the non-operational services of the local trains, it is stated that the BEST bus services were functional. But, then as well, buses were utilized for the transportation of those employees who fell under the essential services category.
