The state government has taken an important decision regarding the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP). 125 acres of Deonar Dumping Ground will be given to those declared ineligible for free housing under this project. So far, the government has sanctioned 255 acres of Mithagara land at Kanjurmarg and Mulund, 140 acres of land at Madh Island and 21.25 acres of Kurla Dairy for rental housing projects.
The land given to the Adani-led DRP, including the Deonar dumping ground plot, amounts to 541.25 acres. Revenue Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil told Hindustan Times that the land was sought by DRP Private Limited and was approved by the state.
Dharavi residents who are living in slums and have constructed houses before 1st January 2000 will be considered eligible under the Dharavi scheme. Also those who are ineligible will be given houses in rental housing schemes at a rate of INR 2.5 lakh per house.
In Mulund, Kurla, Dahisar and Bhakti Park, local residents and BJP leaders strongly opposed the land allotment. So the state's housing department moved to the Deonar dumping yard plot, where the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has stopped dumping solid waste.
