To enhance Mumbai's green spaces and maintain environmental balance, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to plant trees on 4 acres of land in Kurla, Powai, and Borivali. Approximately 3,500 trees will be planted in a traditional manner across these plots. The tender process for this initiative has been completed, and the proposal has been sent to the Municipal Commissioner for final approval. Once approved, tree plantation will commence.

Development activities in Mumbai have been affecting the environment, with many trees being cut down to make way for various projects. However, the BMC aims to focus on development while ensuring environmental balance. The Parks Department of the Municipal Corporation regularly undertakes tree plantation drives to increase the city’s tree population. In July last year, the BMC identified three large plots in Kurla (Chandivali), Powai, and Borivali for tree plantation. Under this plan, 3,500 trees will be planted on the 4-acre plot in the traditional way. After completing the tender process, the proposal was sent for approval to the Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani. Once approved, tree planting will begin.

The contractor will be responsible for the initial maintenance of the trees. The BMC plans to complete the plantation within three months. After two years, the maintenance will be handed over to the Parks Department. The land in Powai, Kurla, and Borivali was developed according to the carpet area index and transferred to the Municipal Corporation in the form of Transferable Development Rights (TDR) for tree plantation.

Following this, the BMC decided to plant trees on the 4-acre plot. After approval from the Municipal Commissioner, the green spaces on these plots will be developed, thus contributing to environmental sustainability.

In addition to traditional planting, the BMC also plans to use the Miyawaki method for tree plantation. The tender for this eco-friendly initiative has been completed, and a contractor has been selected. These efforts are expected to significantly increase Mumbai's green cover.
