Work on the fifth and sixth railway lines between Borivali and Virar is on the roll. Western Railway (WR) has achieved a major milestone with the selection of a contractor to build Bridges 73 and 75 over Vasai Creek. These bridges will connect Bhayandar and Naigaon stations.
The Mumbai Railway Development Corporation (MRDC) is overseeing the expansion under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) 3A. The project covers a 26 km stretch and has an estimated cost of INR 2,184 crore. As per reports, the construction will take 36 months. Procurement for other major bridges along the route is still ongoing.
WR has already completed work on the sixth railway line between Khar and Kandivali. The extension to Borivali is expected to be completed by year-end. The next phase will focus on expanding the railway line from Borivali to Virar. The goal is to improve train frequency, reduce congestion, and enhance connectivity.
To balance the environmental impact of tree cutting for the project, MRVC has started a mangrove plantation initiative. The plantation started in December 2024 and will be completed in the next three months. The forest department’s mangrove cell is assisting with the process.
As per reports, 10% of the project has been completed so far. Construction is progressing, and environmental measures are in place.
