Electric ferries will start operating between Uran and the Gateway of India in two weeks. This will cut the travel time in half. The launch was initially planned for January but was delayed due to technical issues. Now, the boats are ready for operation. Currently, speed trials are underway.
JNPA had leased two e-ferries in December last year for INR 37.8 crores. The lease term is 10 years. The e-ferries will serve daily commuters, JNPA staff, and officials from customs, the air force, CISF, and port authorities.
Wooden boats have been used for years. But they take over an hour for the journey. The new ferries will take only 30 to 40 minutes. Passengers can book tickets online. Each ferry can carry 20 to 24 passengers. The number of trips and schedules will be set based on demand.
The route will vary based on the season. During bad weather, the ferries will run between Bhaucha Dhakka and JNPA. In better conditions, they will run between the Gateway of India and JNPA. This will make it safe for passengers.
The ferries will also improve passenger comfort. They will have air-conditioned seating. The reduced travel time will benefit daily commuters by saving up to 20 minutes. The project is part of the Harit Sagar initiative, which promotes green port operations.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways launched this programme to increase renewable energy use at ports. The goal is to achieve 60% renewable energy use and net zero emissions by 2047.
