The Mumbai Traffic Police and the RTOs are taking strict action against speeding on the coastal road. The authorities have issued e-challans to 596 vehicles between February 13 and 17. RTO flying squads were also used for fining vehicles for exceeding the speed limit.

Four RTO flying squads from Tardeo and Wadala have been stationed along the 10-kilometre stretch between Marine Drive and Worli. The teams monitor vehicles at key entry and exit points. High-end cars, including Mercedes, Audis, and BMWs, were also caught speeding.

The crackdown came after a state transport department meeting. Earlier this year, a racing incident caused a car to crash into a tunnel wall on the coastal road. This led to two drivers losing their licenses and their vehicles being seized. The crash also caused traffic congestion.

Of the total 596 e-challans, the Wadala RTO recorded 290 cases, while the Tardeo RTO reported 306. The RTO and Mumbai Traffic Police are working together to prevent reckless driving and enforce traffic rules.

On average, 18,000 to 20,000 vehicles use the coastal road daily. Meanwhile, a new section of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP) has opened. On February 12, the public gained access to an important interchange at Haji Ali Juice Centre.

This new link connects Marine Drive with Haji Ali. The last phase of the project, linking Lotus Jetty-Worli Naka to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL), is expected to be completed by mid-March.

The 10.58-kilometre-long coastal road runs from the Princess Street Flyover at Marine Drive to the Worli end of BWSL. The project includes multi-level interchanges at Haji Ali, Peddar Road, and Worli Sea Face.
