In a remarkable achievement, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has successfully completed its annual desilting drive ahead of deadline, which was May 31. It has surpassed its targets by clearing a staggering 981,506 metric tonnes of silt from mumbai's nullahs and rivers.

The desilting process plays a crucial role in preventing flooding during the monsoon season. It was carried out by the Storm Water Drainage Department. Every year, engineers analyse the situation and set a specific goal for silt removal. This year, the target was determined to be 979,882 metric tonnes, based on their assessments.

BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal made active efforts to ensure the successful completion of the desilting project. He instructed officials to allocate additional workers whenever necessary. Despite achieving the target, the desilting process will continue. It will maximise the efficiency of the city's drainage system.

This year, the BMC implemented stricter requirements for contractors in the tender process. Contractors were obligated to submit geotagged images and videos as proof of their work. Additionally, visual evidence of ongoing projects and the proper transportation of silt were also required.

As of May 25, over 1,544,500 geotagged photos and 72,300 videos had been uploaded to the designated website. Furthermore, the BMC even took measures to prevent pollution and illegal dumping. CCTV cameras were installed at dump locations. The corporation also appealed to residents to refrain from disposing of trash in the nullahs.
