The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is hopeful to open the much-awaited Delisle Bridge in Lower Parel to vehicular traffic just in time for Diwali. The bridge has seen its share of delays and missed three deadlines in the past.

The bridge's reopening was initially targeted for May 2022. The project faced several hurdles, including the curing of concrete, a water tanker strike, and a steel shortage this year. Despite these challenges, the left arm of the second section was opened to traffic on September 18, a day earlier than the Ganeshotsav festival. This section connects Lower Parel with Currey Road. Another section of the bridge, which connects NM Joshi Marg with GK Marg, has been open since June 1.

So far, work on the surface, painting, and asphalt has begun. The BMC aims to fully open the bridge by November, after certification from the consultant. In a report by HT, P. Velrasu, auxiliary municipal commissioner (projects), confirmed plans to fully open the bridge before Diwali.

Delisle Bridge serves as an important link between Lower Parel, Worli, Prabhadevi, and Currey roads in the west and Byculla in the east. Its closure since July 24, 2018, has caused inconvenience for local residents and office-goers.

The Western Railway (WR) and BMC are collaborating on the bridge's construction. The contract for restoring the railway part was issued in February 2019 for INR 87 crore. The city government had issued a contract in January 2020 for INR 138 crore for the demolition and reconstruction of approach roads.
