BMC Budget 2020: Hike in Education budget by approximately 7.7 per cent

In 2019-20, ₹2733.77 crores were allocated for education while the same has increased to ₹2944.59 crores this year.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday presented its education budget for the financial year 2020-21 and allocated ₹2,944 crores to the same. The education budget was presented by Joint Municipal Commissioner (Education) Ashutosh Salil to Education Committee Chairperson Anjali Naik. 


In 2019-20, ₹2733.77 crores were allocated for education while the same has increased to ₹2944.59 crores this year. This year, the education budget has been increased by almost 7.7 per cent, i.e. ₹211 crores as compared to the last year. 


The civic body has allocated ₹2.50 crore for primary education while ₹45 lakh also been allocated for secondary education. The officials have decided to provide financial aid for the undergraduate degree. BMC will allocate ₹50 lakh to for first 25 rank holders from the state board (SSC).

BMC has also proposed to set up a digital telescope and mini observatory to give students a first-hand experience of space science. A budget allocation of ₹ 26 lakh has been made for the same. As per the grants from Maharashtra government, the budget provisions of ₹1031.92 crores has been made under primary education assistance. Moreover, the proposal for revenue of ₹129.94 crores for secondary education has been made.

In the education budget, drawing inspiration from Kerala schools, the BMC has stressed on the implementation of three water break bells as a reminder for the students to drink water. 

Focusing on the security of the students in BMC schools, the civic body has decided to install 6,666 CCTV cameras at gates and classrooms of class 4 to 7. A budget of ₹20 crores has been allocated for the same. For specially-abled schools, the BMC will provide hand sanitizers in 17 such schools and a budget of ₹1.84 crore has been approved for the same.

The BMC has also proposed to delegate new powers to school headteachers, affiliation to ICSE and CBSE board. Moreover, there is also a proposal to give the power to certify and approve bills up to ₹ 10,000.
