Till Wednesday, November 24, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) collected more than INR 78.55 crore from citizens for not wearing masks in public areas since the commencement of the COVID-19 pandemic, highlight reports.
On an average of wards, from April 2020 to November 24, which according to the data is said to be 603 days, 222.25 cases were registered. For which the amount of fines collected stands at INR 44701.81.
Additionally, it was reported earlier this week that the civic authority had decided to spend 50 per cent of fines collected for not wearing masks for civic work. These activities will include development work, health services, amongst others.
Based on reports, Additional Municipal Commissioner, Suresh Kakani had mentioned that half of the money is streamlined to the BMC’s common fund. From development projects to coronavirus-related expenditure, all will be covered under the same.
On Friday, November 19, it was reported that experts suggested on how citizens of Mumbai could have to continue wearing a face mask for another “10 to 12 months”. Additionally, the Maharashtra government’s COVID-19 task force mentioned that masks must be utilized to supplement the protection provided by vaccines.
Back in October, however, accounts had claimed that commuters in Mumbai local trains found without donning a face mask had sharply declined.
