The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has confiscated a total of 358 utilities like handcarts and gas cylinders that were being used at illegal food stalls at public spaces in mumbai.

This development came on the first day of its crackdown against illegal eateries on Tuesday, June 18. The teams raided several food joints and “Khao Gallis” across all the 24 municipal wards in Mumbai.

In this campaign against street food vendors, the civic body aims to curb the spread of illnesses during the monsoon season.

The drive is being initiated between 6-9 pm daily, when there is a high footfall of customers at these eateries. According to the civic officials, three designated teams have been deployed for the island city, eastern and western suburbs.

The move comes weeks after a teenager lost his life after consuming street food from one of the stalls in Mankhurd locality in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs.

The BMC data shows that out of the total items confiscated, 83 were handcarts, 105 gas cylinders that were being used for running the stalls and 141 makeshift entities like sandwich stalls and other food utilities. Civic officials acted against illegal food vendors in areas such as Bandra, Kalina, Dadar, and Kurla.

The civic officials maintained that these confiscated items have been shifted to a BMC godown and the owners will have to acquire them back by paying a penalty. However, another official stated that the handcarts that are seized will be demolished, since there is no provision of issuing licenses and allowing handcarts to operate legally on the roads of Mumbai.
