The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has urged the citizens to Holi in an environmentally responsible manner, ensuring that festivities do not harm nature or public well-being.

In a public appeal issued on X, the civic bodies emphasized the importance of celebrating Holika Dahan and Rang Panchami in an eco-friendly and traditional manner.

They encouraged to save water and avoid noise pollution during the celebrations.

Key Points by BMC For Mumbaikars:

In the X post, BMC mentioned that by stating "Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Public appeal While celebrating your festivals/festivals with joy, it is also important to take care of the environment and keep the Mumbai metropolis clean and healthy. In this regard, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is appealing to all citizens to cooperate in celebrating Holi and Dhulwad / Rangpanchami".


Holika Dahan
  • Do not cut trees. Instead Holika dahan should be done in the traditional way using dry wood.
  • Wood, plastic, rubber, tires and other hazardous materials dyed using chemical agents should not be used in Holi. Because the smoke and pollution generated from such elements are harmful to health.
  • Housing societies, local group groups should burn Holika in a safe and environmentally friendly manner.

Embrace Natural Colours

  • Use natural (herbal) and organic colours that are safe for the skin. This is especially important for young children.
  • Artificial colors may contain chemicals and other heavy metals. It also harms health and water resources. So they should be avoided.

Save Water & No Noise Pollution

  • While celebrating Dhulvad and Rangpanchami, dry colors should be preferred as much as possible. Save as much as possible by using water responsibly.
  • The sound of instruments and music etc. should be within such a limit that no one is disturbed.
  • Noise limits should be observed especially in hospitals, residential areas and sensitive places.

Guidelines by NMMC For Navi Mumbaikars:

Taking to X, NMMC stated: "Avoid chemical colors! They can cause skin rashes, allergies, eye irritation, and even long-term health damage. Protect your skin and well-being choose natural, safe colors. Celebrate Holi the eco-friendly way and enjoy a happy, healthy festival!"

"It is the duty of all of us to take care of the environment while celebrating festivals and celebrations with joy. That's why let's celebrate eco-friendly Holi festival, Dhulivandan and protect the nature."

In order to celebrate Holi without harming the environment, the citizens should follow these guidelines issued by IAS Dr. Kailash Shinde, NMMC Commissioner and Administrator:

• Items like wood waste, waste material etc. should be used for Holika burning without felling of trees. 

• Strict care should be taken so that there is no waste of water while playing Holi.

• Only natural eco-friendly colors should be used (eg Gulal, Turmeric etc.).

• Chemical or metallic colors are harmful to eyes, skin and environment and their use should be avoided completely.

• Considering the importance of water, use of water should be minimized or avoided.

• Do not use balloons or plastic bags as they pose a risk to the environment and human organs

• Avoid air pollution as well as noise pollution

• Care should also be taken with pets while playing with colors.

• Initiatives should be taken for proper disposal of waste generated after Holi festival.
