The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) chief Bhushan Gagrani has reportedly instructed officials to prioritise waste-to-energy projects at Deonar and Kanjurmarg. This decision will bring an end to the 10-year-old plan for a waste management facility in Ambernath's Karavali village.

The Ambernath project has faced continuous resistance from locals. Sources suggest that the civic body is now planning to drop the initiative.

The state government had allocated 38 hectares in Ambernath to set up a waste treatment plant following orders from the Bombay High Court. This facility was intended to address the growing waste management crisis in Mumbai. However, local opposition stopped progress.

As per a report by Midday, the BMC operates two waste treatment plants, one in Deonar and another in Kanjurmarg. A solid waste treatment facility in Ambernath’s Karavali village was proposed decades ago. Most of the required 52.10 hectares had been acquired, with only 1.5 hectares remaining. The project, however, faced objections from residents, which slowed its advancement.

The Kanjurmarg facility is equipped with advanced waste treatment technology. In contrast, the Deonar facility does not process waste scientifically, leading to untreated garbage.

Furthermore, the lack of available land for new waste treatment facilities is a significant challenge. The authorities have now decided to focus on enhancing waste-to-energy capacity at the Kanjurmarg site. This strategy is expected to improve the city’s waste management system.
