The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has received as many as 2,427 complaints regarding water issues in the last one month.
As per the data revealed by the civic body, the seven lakes suppling water to Mumbai city are at the total capacity of 99 per cent. Despite this, several areas in the city are facing water shortages and contamination issue.
Therefore, the BMC chief Bhushan Gagrani has decided to form a flying squad to identify and repair leakages and curb unauthorised water connections. Additionally, the municipality has warned that illegal motor pumps will be seized and penal action will be taken against those found to be unauthorised.
The current water storage in the seven lakes that supply the city is sufficient to last till the next monsoon. However, many areas including Pratiksha Nagar Sion, Santacruz-Kalina, Andheri East, Shiveri and Wadala are still experiencing water shortages.
On Monday, October 7, MLA Amin Patel met Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani regarding water scarcity and unsanitary conditions in Dongri, Zakaria Masjid Street, Memon Wada, Gujar Galli and Mumbadevi areas.
Recently, T.J. Road, Crescent Bay, Jerbai Wadia Road, Century Mill Mhada Compound, Khar Danda, Bandra (East), Malad, Kranti Nagar in Dindoshi and Rajendra Nagar in Borivali were found to experience low water pressure. The municipal officials claimed that the local ward offices have resolved the complaints promptly.
