The BMC has decided to deal with the issue of illegal debris dumping in Mumbai by installing CCTV cameras across four key wards. In the first phase, 117 cameras will be placed in Andheri, Goregaon, Malad, and Borivali. The cameras will identify people who dump construction waste in public areas.
After review, BMC officials selected the four key locations where waste is dumped most frequently. Of the total, 40 cameras will be installed in Malad, 25 in Andheri West, 2 in Goregaon West, and 50 in Borivali. The BMC believes these cameras will allow them to identify both individuals and vehicle numbers involved in illegal dumping.
The BMC will also equip staff with a smartphone app to monitor the cameras. The app will provide them with real-time information, including images and addresses of dumping sites. The app will also connect with LED screens in local waste offices for easier monitoring.
However, the project will not move forward until after the state assembly elections.
This project is a response to the rising number of complaints regarding unlawful debris disposal. It has now become the second-most reported issue in the city. This also comes after a clean-up operation where 150 metric tonnes of debris were removed in a single day from various locations.
Earlier this year, some wards, including Borivali and Colaba, installed cameras at common dumping sites. The project's tender was opened in February but was delayed due to technical issues. The Lok Sabha elections in June also delayed it.
Despite various efforts like debris on-call service, illegal dumping continues to occur. People also dump debris at night to avoid detection. To handle this, special teams have been set up in different wards to keep a watch on these activities.
