As part of the annual pre-monsoon drive this year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set its sights on trimming 1.11 lakh trees before June 7. The civic body has so far pruned 12,467 trees. The BMC said it has also issued notices to 1,855 private and government premises, directing them to cut tall trees.

Due to strong winds and heavy rains during monsoon, weak trees often fall and their fall turns deadly, as the city witnesses many incidents of deaths and injuries during the monsoon months. To curb such incidents, the civic body identifies dangerous and dead trees across the city and prunes them before the onset of monsoon. In Mumbai, the official date of onset of monsoon is June 11.

This year, after surveying 1.86 lakh big trees in its jurisdiction, the civic body identified 1,11,670 lakh roadside trees which will be scientifically cut by June 7. On Sunday, April 7, the BMC said it had pruned at least 12,467 trees.

As per senior civic officials, the pre-monsoon works include removal of dead and dangerous trees, pruning of overgrown branches, scientific care of roots and trunks of trees, among others. Besides this, the civic body has also issued notices to 1,855 government, semi-government as well as private institutions, asking them to cut big trees in a scientific manner and with prior permission from the BMC.

According to the tree census in 2014, Mumbai has 29.75 lakh trees. Of these, 15.51 lakh trees are in private premises and 10.67 lakh trees are in government properties.
