The alarming rate at which coronavirus has been spreading in Mumbai and other parts of the state in the past few weeks had led many to believe that another lockdown of the capital city is on the anvil.
However, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) additional commissioner Suresh Kakani said that is not considering imposing a lockdown at this stage and would instead rely on a two-pronged approach of increased testing and strict implementation of wearing face masks in public spaces to bring the number of cases down.
He also stated that 97 per cent of the patients live in buildings, while only two to three per cent live in slum areas.
Kakani expressed that the situation is under control and various measures are being implemented by the municipal administration. In Mumbai, meanwhile, the COVID-19 growth rate from February 25 to March 3 was 0.29 per cent. Mumbai's recovery rate is 93 per cent. Till March 3, nearly 33,53,124 tests have been done in Mumbai.
Moreover, Suresh Kakani has inspected Chembur, Andheri West, Bandra West, Kandivali, Borivali and other divisions to review the situation.
At present, there are 14 active cantonment zones in Mumbai, with a total of 185 sealed buildings. The central government has given permission for vaccination to 29 private hospitals in Mumbai to avoid congestion.
The citizens must first register themselves and then go to the centre to get vaccinated, appealed Kakani.
